The long description is perfect as a brief summary. (The executive summary or business plan and other images, plans, graphs or other can be uploaded as documents). The story told here is important. What do you do? What is your market? What is your potential? What do you raise money for? Make sure your write a good story. The first sentences are crucial. There you get or lose attention. Next you add information about the organization, number of employees, management, board of directors, shareholders and accountant.

Now you have come to the interesting part, funding!
These fields are optional until you open up for your investment round. The financial information you add will appear directly in a calculation on how you value your company. The information will be displayed in a box below the fields.

For example:
You have evaluated the startup at 1 000 000
You are willing to give out 10% of the total shares for 100 000
The minimum investment will be 10 000 for 1% of the total shares

Only share information you are comfortable with to share with others. You can rewrite your business plan but leave out the business secrets. A potential investor who wants more information can always contact you at a later stage and get more detailed information then. Maybe you can take a meeting over a cup of coffee?
You don?t have to tell the world every little detail.

Recommendations
A member on the page can leave a recommendation for your project. Before it?s published you can decide whether you want to have it published or not, you either approve or decline the recommendation

Manage your project

Interest round
When your business presentation is complete and approved by FundedByMe your interest round starts. We believe equity crowdfunding is more than just about money, money is a positive side effect and attention, feedback, energy and passionate owner/ambassadors are crucial. During the ?awaiting interest? round you can gain momentum and attention. The feedback, experience and expertise added by the crowd and advisors can make the difference between a good and a great company. Members can easily express their interest in working for/with your company as well as invest in it and how much. When a member expresses its interest you either approve or decline it. Members you decline will not receive any notification about it.

Give your followers and potential investors updates, keep them informed and answer on their questions. But whatever you do never forget your crowd! They are your most valuable resource!

Investment round
After analysing the data, reaction, feedback and interest in the ?awaiting interest? round, you can make a very, very educated guess if you should open a round, how high to aim and how the round will go.

The members who have registered their interest and have become selected by you will then get an offer to invest in your company. All logged-in members can follow the investment round and report their interest, but only those you select get the opportunity to participate. Selected members that want to become equity owners sign up their interest by using a digital signature. No money will be deposited at this stage.

The investor is free to withdraw its order until the investment round is closed. A round is 3 months long or until 100% is achieved. If your round does not reach 100% in 90 days the round is not completed, and the investors don?t have to go through with their investments.

Your crowdfunding campaign succeeds
Congrats. That means you are a real entrepreneurial rockstar! Maybe even the next big thing.

First you have to find a partner that can help you with term sheets and contract of sale. We can recommend you great partners for this. After that you?ll invoice all new shareholders and pay the administrative fees. Then the real fun begins! This is a milestone and the beginning of a new era for your company.

After reading this manual you will be ready to put up your business presentation on FundedByMe Equity. For more inspiration or if you have any questions please read our FAQ and blog.

Model shows dramatic global decline in ratio of workers to retired people

A new statistical model predicts that by 2100 the number of people older than 85 worldwide will increase more than previously estimated, and there will be fewer working-age adults to support them than previously expected.

The findings, reported by researchers at the University of Washington and the United Nations, suggest an even greater decrease in the coming decades in support for social security programs for elderly adults.

Lead author Adrian Raftery, UW professor of statistics and sociology, was surprised by how dramatically the proportion of the world's "oldest old" will increase by the end of the century.

"This has been studied a lot in developed countries, but what we see with this model is that the increase in people over 85 will be a worldwide phenomenon," he said.

The study will be published Aug. 20 in the online early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In China, the world's most-populous country, the number of working-age adults for each person 65 or older will shrink from 7.9 in 2010 to 1.6 in 2100. The ratio in India, the world's second-most-populous country, will decrease from 11.1 in 2010 to 2.0 in 2100.

The United States' ratio declines from 4.6 in 2010 to 1.8 by the end of the century. Other developed nations with low fertility rates show somewhat larger declines, including the Netherlands dropping from 4.0 to 1.6 and the United Kingdom dropping from 3.6 to 1.6 by century's end.

"The United States has more favorable numbers than other developed countries now, and will retain a slight advantage over other countries at the end of the century," Raftery said. He attributes the United States' relatively more-promising outlook to the country's higher levels of new births and to immigration.

The researchers did not produce population predictions for the 38 countries with generalized HIV/AIDS epidemics, because those nations require a different statistical method.

Standard population projection methods yield just one estimate without giving a sense of wiggle room. In contrast, Raftery and his co-authors developed a Bayesian statistical approach that produces a low and high estimate for each country's population as well as the likelihood that the actual population will fall in that range. The method makes population predictions based on countries' previous fertility and mortality rates and immigration patterns.

This probabilistic strategy allows policy-makers to make better-informed decisions, such as determining whether to build new schools.

"We don't know for sure what will happen in the future, but this model gives us a better sense of the accuracy of the projections," Raftery said.

Raftery hopes to use the model to help the United Nations make its 2012 prediction of world population growth, which will be released in February 2013.

Previously, he used a similar statistical model with the United Nations' 2010 population prediction. That model projected a world population of 10.1 billion by 2100, which is 1 billion more than previously thought.

Attributes to Seek in a Reputable Roofing and Siding Contractor

Among the significant roles of siding and roof is to insulate your property. That's the reason it is remarkably important to pick the appropriate contractor who will mount these structural parts to make certain they will not collapse conveniently as they are confronted with the elements. This is vital to increase the general level of convenience of your property.

There are a lot of roofing firms in Amarillo and it's certainly simply a matter of limiting your choices. If you need to hire the most reliable contractor, you must do your exploration. Inquire with friends and family members if they know of any good contractors around the community; after all, verbal evidence is still considered as the best form of promotion.

You may also explore review sites to have an idea of consumer impression and feedback. Avoid those with unfavorable reviews, but also distrust feedback that are excessively beneficial. Absorb everything with a reservation given that gushing critiques might have been planted by the providers themselves. It is recommended that you try to find reviews that are more unprejudiced with a complete list of pros and cons to assist their viewpoint.

Check if the Amarillo siding and roofing firm you're fascinated in is sanctioned to carry out the project in Texas. If they are hesitant or wide open refuse to reveal their license, it may be best for you to seek a different contractor. A service provider might be giving the most ideal rates for their solutions, but that would be worthless if they aren't licensed to perform the project.

Home renovations can be upsetting, so it's wise to do it all at once only to get it over with. Inspect if the Amarillo roofing and siding firm of your choice presents any other home improvement assistance. You could have a new window mounted if you seriously desire to obtain maximum thermal comfort in your home.

If you like the kind of roofing or siding Amarillo residents prefer, you require a reputable contractor for the work. By observing the above-mentioned suggestions, you're guaranteed to be able to identify one. If you like more pointers on the best ways to tap the services of a roofing contractor, you can go to inspectapedia.com/roof/roofcont.htm for more information.

For more details, search amarillo roofing, amarillo siding and siding Amarillo in Google for related information.

Geno Auriemma On 2016 Rio Olympics: 'I Would Say It Is Somebody Else's Turn' To Coach

STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma said he has no interest in returning as head coach of the U.S. national team for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Auriemma met with reporters at UConn, five days after coaching the U.S. team to a fifth straight Olympic gold medal.

He said he was honored to get the job and ecstatic with the results, but described his interest level in doing it again as "zero."

"If you ask me right now, today, I would say it is somebody else's turn," he said.

Mike Krzyzewski returned as coach of the men's team after the 2008 Games to lead them to another gold medal in London, but the USA has traditionally switched women's basketball coaches after each Olympics.

Tara VanDerveer, Nell Fortner, Van Chancellor and Anne Donovan each led teams to Olympic gold before Auriemma took the job as national coach in 2009.

USA Basketball spokeswoman Caroline Williams said it is too soon for the organization to begin thinking about the coach of the 2016 team.

"USA Basketball generally doesn't even begin the process until at least the winter after the Olympics," she said in an email. "We still have many competitions this year and the next major competition for our USA National Team isn't until 2014, so the coaching staff for the next squad hasn't even come up for discussion yet."

Auriemma said he believes it will be more difficult for the women to win in 2016. Other countries such as France and Turkey are making great strides with their programs, and some key players for the U.S. are aging, he said.

"Do you see any other Sue Birds and Diana Taurasi's and Tamika Catchings out there?" he said. "I don't. I think we're going to have to work harder than we've ever worked to stay where we are."

Auriemma, who has led UConn to seven national titles, said coaching the Olympics was the most pressure he has ever felt.

The U.S. team faced its first halftime deficit in the Olympics in 12 years before pulling away to beat Australia 86-73 in the semifinal game.

France stayed with the U.S. in the first 12 minutes of the final before Candace Parker scored 21 points, including eight straight in the second quarter, to help the U.S. win the gold, 86-50.

Auriemma said he would like to concentrate on coaching his Huskies, who he said could be very "special" over the next two seasons. UConn returns almost everyone from a 33-5 team that lost in the national semifinals and brings in another top-rated recruiting class.

As to whether he would ever consider returning to USA Basketball, Auriemma compared the experience to eating a bowl of his favorite mint-chocolate chip ice cream.

"The second bowl doesn't taste as good as the first one," he said. "It never has and it never will."

Join the club. ? littlemissfuneral

Hi, I?m Lauren. have a crappy cellphone photo of me.

?

Hello everyone!

I?ve recently been getting a lot of views on my blog thanks to the wonderful Caleb Wilde who featured one of my posts on his blog.(You can read it and his great work here ->?http://www.calebwilde.com/2012/08/the-top-5-things-you-should-know-about-funeral-directors/#.UCUQvmvUPbc.facebook)

It was also featured on ConnectingDirectors.com after Caleb?s?initial?post and can be found here ->?http://connectingdirectors.com/articles/35727-the-top-5-things-you-should-know-about-funeral-directors

Well, anyways, thanks to Caleb I?ve recently found numerous blogs written by funeral directors and people in the death care industry and I am just amazed. I guess I really shouldn?t be because when I started my blog I was just thinking of writing about what I do and death the way I see it because I was sick and tired of people always asking me. So I figured, hey, I?ll write about it and you can read it and that will be that. And like, why wouldn?t other people have those same thoughts? Working in a funeral home?definitely?makes for interesting dinner conversations. I was driving in the car with my dad today as a matter of fact, and he asked me if I ever shaved off someone?s beard while embalming when I wasn?t supposed to. I said no, thankfully, however today I had to shave off a man?s mustache after he was embalmed. (The funeral director who embalmed him didn?t know if he was supposed to have a mustache, and like I said, it?s easier to get rid of it after than to put it back on later.) I was telling my dad how difficult it was because he was in fact embalmed and all of a sudden my dad started to laugh. He kind of just shook his head and said, ?Oh Lauren, if normal people could hear some of our conversations.? But these are the things that people ask me. These are the things I write about.

And he?s right of course. My daily life isn?t like everyone else?s. In fact, it?s extremely different. But fellow funeral directors, they get it. I don?t need to explain to them how difficult it is to shave a person who is embalmed because they?ve been there and know. We?re all sort of part of a club. I can make a horrid joke like giving someone their ?fifteen minutes of flame? and they would laugh. They understand that they need to laugh, and they need to have a sense of humor dealing with the dead. And that?s awesome.

Fellow funeral directors who work in/own funeral homes near you aren?t always seen as?colleagues,?though. They?re seen as competition. While I was in school I worked part time in this funeral home in?Massachusetts?and the owner had one of his office ladies look through the paper everyday and mark down what calls his?competitors were doing by scanning the daily obituaries. And I?guarantee?a handful of funeral directors reading this, willing to admit it or not, do the same.?Because it?s important to know that out of 100 calls, I?m doing 75 of them while Joe down the corner only has 25. And you know, I think that it is important for small family owned funeral homes. In today?s day an age family run funeral homes are still able to offer you personalized services and something more. Family run funeral homes are willing to go out of the way and make you feel like you?re apart of their family. With such large corporations out there there?s something to be said about that. And if by writing down what all the local funeral homes are doing in terms of business helps them to sleep at night knowing they can still play the game, well go for it. And yes, I do work for a small family?operated?funeral home and I am gosh darn proud of it.

I?m getting off of the point that I?m trying to make. What I?m trying to say is that it doesn?t matter if someone is your competition. You?re still apart of the same club. You can understand each other. After all, you both work the same crazy hours, you both wake up if that phone rings in the middle of the night, you both get strange looks when you enter a nursing home while wearing a suit. It?s the common factor that unites us all. And we all have something to learn from each other.

Now, I would like to thank Caleb Wilde for allowing me the chance to get to know?another?funeral director through his writing. I?d like to thank him for featuring my post on his website allowing other funeral directors the chance to reach out to me. And I?d like to say that if anyone ever thinks that anything I write is up their alley or witty or maybe caused them to laugh a little bit, I would be honored if they?d want to feature one of my posts on their blog/website. All I ask is for the credit for my piece. (I?m a really nice girl you know, all you have to do is ask!) Just let me know what post you want to use and when you?re going to use it. And if you don?t want to do that and would rather talk about death/dying/funeral homes I?m your girl. I?m always up for some good chit chat and learning?opportunities. And I?m always down for hearing some new funeral jokes. The one?s that I have are all pretty stale.

Iowa brokerage CEO indicted in $200M fraud scheme

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) ? The founder of a bankrupt Iowa-based brokerage accused in a $200 million fraud scheme has been indicted on 31 counts of making false statements to regulators.

A federal grand jury returned the indictment Monday against Peregrine Financial Group CEO Russ Wasendorf Sr.

Wasendorf has been jailed since his arrest last month, which came while he was hospitalized following a failed suicide attempt outside Peregrine's office in Cedar Falls.

The indictment says Wasendorf submitted documents to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission that overstated the amount of customer money held by Peregrine by "at least tens of millions of dollars." If convicted, Wasendorf faces up to 155 years in prison.

Authorities say Wasendorf left a detailed suicide note confessing to a 20-year scheme to commit fraud and embezzle customer funds.

A new energy source: Major advance made in generating electricity from wastewater

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? Engineers at Oregon State University have made a breakthrough in the performance of microbial fuel cells that can produce electricity directly from wastewater, opening the door to a future in which waste treatment plants not only will power themselves, but will sell excess electricity.

The new technology developed at OSU can now produce 10 to 50 more times the electricity, per volume, than most other approaches using microbial fuel cells, and 100 times more electricity than some.

Researchers say this could eventually change the way that wastewater is treated all over the world, replacing the widely used "activated sludge" process that has been in use for almost a century. The new approach would produce significant amounts of electricity while effectively cleaning the wastewater.

The findings have just been published in Energy and Environmental Science, a professional journal, in work funded by the National Science Foundation.

"If this technology works on a commercial scale the way we believe it will, the treatment of wastewater could be a huge energy producer, not a huge energy cost," said Hong Liu, an associate professor in the OSU Department of Biological and Ecological Engineering. "This could have an impact around the world, save a great deal of money, provide better water treatment and promote energy sustainability."

Experts estimate that about 3 percent of the electrical energy consumed in the United States and other developed countries is used to treat wastewater, and a majority of that electricity is produced by fossil fuels that contribute to global warming.

But the biodegradable characteristics of wastewater, if tapped to their full potential, could theoretically provide many times the energy that is now being used to process them, with no additional greenhouse emissions.

OSU researchers reported several years ago on the promise of this technology, but at that time the systems in use produced far less electrical power. With new concepts -- reduced anode-cathode spacing, evolved microbes and new separator materials -- the technology can now produce more than two kilowatts per cubic meter of liquid reactor volume. This amount of power density far exceeds anything else done with microbial fuel cells.

The system also works better than an alternative approach to creating electricity from wastewater, based on anaerobic digestion that produces methane. It treats the wastewater more effectively, and doesn't have any of the environmental drawbacks of that technology, such as production of unwanted hydrogen sulfide or possible release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

The OSU system has now been proven at a substantial scale in the laboratory, Liu said, and the next step would be a pilot study. Funding is now being sought for such a test. A good candidate, she said, might initially be a food processing plant, which is a contained system that produces a steady supply of certain types of wastewater that would provide significant amounts of electricity.

Continued research should also find even more optimal use of necessary microbes, reduced material costs and improved function of the technology at commercial scales, OSU scientists said.

Once advances are made to reduce high initial costs, researchers estimate that the capital construction costs of this new technology should be comparable to that of the activated sludge systems now in widespread use today -- and even less expensive when future sales of excess electricity are factored in.

This technology cleans sewage by a very different approach than the aerobic bacteria used in the past. Bacteria oxidize the organic matter and, in the process, produce electrons that run from the anode to the cathode within the fuel cell, creating an electrical current. Almost any type of organic waste material can be used to produce electricity -- not only wastewater, but also grass straw, animal waste, and byproducts from such operations as the wine, beer or dairy industries.

The approach may also have special value in developing nations, where access to electricity is limited and sewage treatment at remote sites is difficult or impossible as a result.

The ability of microbes to produce electricity has been known for decades, but only recently have technological advances made their production of electricity high enough to be of commercial use.

Paul Ryan's Pick Makes a Ticket of Firsts

Mitt Romney's announcement that Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan will be joining him on the Republican presidential ticket is being described as a "bold" move, with strategists arguing over whether the author of some controversial budget plans will help or hurt Romney in the long run.

But the choice of Ryan is also bold in other, perhaps subtler ways. Ryan's addition to the ticket brings about a series of interesting firsts.

This is the first time since 1964 that Republican presidential ticket has had a congressperson as the vice presidential pick. In 1964, Barry Goldwater chose New York Rep. William E. Miller. It's the first time since 1984 that any presidential ticket has had a congressperson as the VP pick. That year, Democrat Walter Mondale tapped New York Rep. Geraldine Ferraro. (1984 was also the last time Ryan's home state of Wisconsin went red in a presidential election.)

Ryan has no military experience, and his addition to the ticket makes it the first time since 1932 that none of the four presidential and vice presidential contenders have served.

It's the first time in modern history that neither the presidential or vice presidential candidate on a ticket has been of a protestant denomination. Romney is Mormon, Ryan is Catholic.

And it's the first time that a candidate has been on the presidential ballot who was born in the 1970s - Ryan was born Jan. 29, 1970.

NASA Rover's New Red Planet Address: Yellowknife, Mars

The patch of Mars where NASA's Curiosity rover touched down Sunday night (Aug. 5) has a name: Yellowknife.

The moniker is a tribute to the capital of Canada's Northwest Territories, a city that has long served as the jumping-off point for geologists interested in studying?North America's oldest rocks, scientists said.

"If you ask, 'What is the port of call you leave from to go on the great missions of geological mapping to the oldest rocks in North America?' ? it's Yellowknife," Curiosity chief scientist John Grotzinger, of Caltech in Pasadena, told reporters Friday (Aug. 10).

In the home stretch of Curiosity's eight-month space cruise, Grotzinger and his team divided the rover's predicted landing zone inside Mars' Gale Crater into a set of 151 "quadrangles," each of which measures about 1 mile (0.6 km) on a side.

The idea was to break the work of characterizing the landing zone into manageable chunks. The?Curiosity rover landed on Quadrangle 51, which the team has dubbed Yellowknife.

Curiosity's main mission is to determine if the Gale Crater area could ever have supported microbial life. Mars appears hostile to Earth-like life today, at least on the surface. But things might have been different in the past, which is why the rover team is drawing connections with the 2.7-billion-year-old rocks of northwest Canada.

"We went to Mars to really get at the ancient geology, because that's where we think there might be evidence for past environments similar to on Earth," said Curiosity deputy project scientist Joy Crisp, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "So it's connected in that way ? simply, ancient rocks that might preserve evidence of past environments favorable for life."

Curiosity will likely be in Yellowknife for a while (the rover won't even take its first drive for two weeks or so), but eventually the six-wheeled robot will leave the quadrangle to explore more of Gale and to investigate Mount Sharp, the mysterious 3-mile-high (5 km) mountain that rises from the crater's center.

The mission team is not in a big rush. Curiosity's prime mission is slated to last about two Earth years, and the rover's nuclear power source may keep it roaming for considerably longer than that if no key parts break down, researchers have said.

Demoted policeman sues over Sheen escort in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A D.C. police captain who was demoted after actor Charlie Sheen received a high-speed police escort to a performance has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the department.

Hilton Burton alleges in his suit that he was punished for saying that police escorts for celebrities were a common practice. That statement contradicted Police Chief Cathy Lanier, who said the escort broke department protocol.

Burton's lawyer says the suit seeks at least $6 million.

Burton was demoted from commander to captain about a month after testifying before the D.C. Council. He was also transferred from his division.

Lanier has said the demotion wasn't connected to the escort or to Burton's testimony. She didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Composer Marvin Hamlisch dies at 68 in Los Angeles

Marvin Hamlisch, who composed or arranged the scores for dozens of movies including "The Sting" and the Broadway smash "A Chorus Line," has died in Los Angeles. He was 68.

Family spokesman Jason Lee said Hamlisch collapsed and died Monday after a brief illness. Other details were not released.

Hamlisch's career included composing, conducting and arranging music from Broadway to Hollywood, from symphonies to R&B hits. He won every major award in his career, including three Academy Awards, four Emmys, four Grammys, a Tony and three Golden Globes.

His music colored some of Hollywood and Broadway's most important works.

Hamlisch composed more than 40 film scores, including "Sophie's Choice," ''Ordinary People," ''The Way We Were" and "Take the Money and Run." He won his third Oscar for his adaptation of Scott Joplin's music for "The Sting." His latest work came for Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant!"

On Broadway, Hamlisch received both a Tony and the Pulitzer Prize in 1975 for the long-running favorite "A Chorus Line" and wrote the music for "The Goodbye Girl" and "Sweet Smell of Success." He was scheduled to fly to Nashville, Tenn., this week to see a production of his musical "The Nutty Professor," according to his publicist.

The Julliard School of Music graduate even reached into the pop world, writing the No. 1 R&B hit "Break It to Me Gently" with Carole Bayer Sager for Aretha Franklin. He won the 1974 Grammys for best new artist and song of the year, "The Way We Were," performed by Barbra Streisand.

That ballad exemplified Hamlisch's old-fashioned appeal ? it was a big, sentimental movie ballad that brought huge success in the rock era. He was extremely versatile, able to write for stage and screen, for soundtracks ranging from Woody Allen comedies to a somber drama like "Ordinary People."

He was perhaps even better known for his work adapting Joplin on "The Sting." In the mid-'70s, it seemed everybody with a piano had the sheet music to "The Entertainer," the movie's theme song. To this day, it's blasted by ice cream trucks.

Hamlisch's place in popular culture reached beyond his music. Known for his nerdy look, complete with thick eyeglasses, that image was sealed on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" during Gilda Radner's "Nerd" sketches. Radner, playing Lisa Loopner, would swoon over Hamlisch.

Hamlisch was principal pops conductor for symphony orchestras in Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Dallas, Pasadena, Seattle and San Diego at the time of his death. He was to be announced to the same position with the Philadelphia Orchestra and also was due to lead the New York Philharmonic during its upcoming New Year's Eve concert.

He was working on a new musical, "Gotta Dance," at the time of his death and was scheduled to write the score for a new film on Liberace, "Behind the Candelabra."

He leaves behind a legacy in film and music that transcended notes on the page. As illustrative as the scenes playing out in front of the music, his scores helped define some of Hollywood's most iconic works.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Terre.

The Art of Delegation | IT Staffing Atlanta | IT Business Consulting ...

Learning how to delegate is one of the most important tools a leaders can have. Realizing that you cannot do everything alone and that another set of eyes might be more helpful can be a game changer. In this blog, we will look at two stories of how delegation has worked for Chloe Drew and Russell Sy.

Case Study #1: Hire people you can delegate to
Chloe Drew wasn?t always good at delegation. Having worked on political campaigns where resources were hard to come by, her instinct was always to do everything herself. But now, as the executive director of a growing non-profit organization, she?s come to appreciate how much she must rely on others to get work done. ?I can?t be integral to everything we do. I need to be replaceable,? she says.

When hiring, Chloe specifically looks for people who are ready to take ownership from their first day on the job. ?I?m trying to create a team of mini-entrepreneurs,? she says. Chloe recently asked a new hire, who has deep experience with learning and development programs in financial services, to run her organization?s leadership institute. ?She?s responsible for building it as if it were a separate business,? Chloe explains. ?I still want to be in the loop because I have to answer to the board on the project, but I trust her to run with it.? Although delegation didn?t come to Chloe naturally, she has learned to let go. ?It?s better for the health of the organization if I don?t swoop in and try to prevent mistakes,? she says. That?s the only way she can get what she needs from her team members, including her newest employee. ?I hired her for her skills and expertise. And that increases my chances of delegating with ease,? she explains.

Case Study #2: Make it a win-win-win
Russell Sy, a managing director at a company that develops and manages business parks in the United Arab Emirates, learned how to delegate effectively from watching others. ?I am fortunate to have a top-notch direct supervisor,? he says. ?Constantly observing her delegate, motivate, and manage for results has taught me a lot.? But, like most managers, Russell has had both positive and negative experiences with delegation.

In a previous role, he was assigned to lead a newly formed division. The CEO had combined five separate functions and asked Russell to ensure the integration went smoothly and saved the company money. Right off, he met with the five department heads to brainstorm how they would meet the CEO?s mandate. He delegated several projects to each leader. Within a few weeks, he saw that one of the departments was falling behind and quickly assessed that the department head was the obstacle. The leader was unhappy with the integration and thought it diminished his power, so he refused to cooperate. Eventually, Russell had to replace him. ?I learned from this failure that it is important to delegate to someone who is genuinely on board,? he says.

Now Russell looks for delegation opportunities that will benefit him, the direct report, and the organization. For example, when his company?s parent group recently asked for a review of the business, he asked a new hire to prepare the information packet because he felt it was a great way to orient the employee. Also, ?having a fresh pair of eyes look at our business uncovered a few blind spots,? he says. Russell realizes trusting a newcomer with such an important task was perhaps a gamble. But he felt the risk could be mitigated by ?instructions, open lines of communication for questions and comments, and regular checkpoints.?

Toshiba Satellite U845W review: an Ultrabook with a screen size all its own

DNP Toshiba Satellite U845W review an Ultrabook with a screen size all its own

Ultrabooks now come in countless shapes and sizes, and we've seen display quality vary just as much. Though 1,366 x 768 may still be the norm, 1,600 x 900 panels aren't unheard of in this ultraportable category. But what about a screen that bucks the 16:9 aspect ratio for an extra-wide 21:9? Toshiba is mixing things up with its new premium Satellite U845W Ultrabook ($1,000 and up), the first laptop to feature that odd aspect ratio.

Styled in the fashion of movie theater screens, the U845W's 14.4-inch, 1,792 x 768 panel adds more horizontal pixels -- ostensibly to enhance the movie-watching experience. In theory, too, that setup should allow for more room to multitask with windows side by side. So how good of an idea is a 21:9 screen in practice? Join us as we put it to the test.

5a.m. Flash 060812 ? The New Writer ? Morgen Bailey's Writing Blog

Every now and then at 5a.m. (probably posted by my clone) I will be bringing you a newsflash, update on what I?m doing, invited guest piece, or whatever takes my fancy, and today is about The New Writer magazine and their subscriber newsletter. They provide so much information in the newsletter that replicating their latest edition (which I had permission from the lovely Merric to do so) would have run to 12 Microsoft Word pages, hardly a ?flash?, so I?ve done a bit of a synopsis here?

  • The newsletter starts off with news and views around the internet and from useful sites to events around the UK.
  • It?s then packed with competition information (some of which I hadn?t got already so have added, accredited of course, to my blog?s competitions page), submission opportunities and much more.

The New Writer is an incredibly active magazine beyond the page and their own opportunities include?

  • TNW?S editor Suzanne Ruthven is also Commissioning Editor for Compass Books at John Hunt Publishing. Compass Books for new writers focuses on practical and informative ?how-to? books. Written by experienced authors who also have extensive experience of tutoring at the most popular creative writing workshops, the books offer an insight into the more specialised niches of the publishing game.? All submissions for Compass Books should come initially in the form of a biography, synopsis and full chapter breakdown to suzanneruthven333@gmail.com. Writers? guidelines can be found at http://www.compass-books.net/submissions.html&i=11. Compass Books is also on Facebook.
  • The New Writer Magazine Online Writing Course: Plotting & Coursing The Novel. This is an ideal course for those who have just started a novel, and for those who have got ?bogged down? with an existing one. Discover how to kick-start the narrative with Suzanne Ruthven, editor of The New Writer who has tutored this course at Horncastle College (Lincs) and the University of Wales? Writers? Summer School.? Participants should have completed at least the first 2-3 chapters, and be able to submit a full synopsis of the novel at the time of registration. The course includes: Lesson One Who?s going to read my novel?, Lesson Two: Plot and Theme, Lesson Three: Characterisation, Lesson Four: Pace and narrative style, Lesson Five: Bones and Padding, Lesson Six: Publishers and Agents. The fee is ?20 per lesson paid in advance via PayPal. This ensures that the writer pays only for the tuition received and can withdraw from the course at any time. For more information send an email to suzanneruthven333@gmail.com marked Subject: online writing course.
  • The New Writer?s website (http://www.thenewwriter.com) explains, ?It?s different and it?s aimed at all writers: the short story writer, the novelist, the poet, feature writer, anyone with a serious intent to develop their writing to meet the expectations of today?s editors. Launched in September 1996, in every issue you?ll find original short stories, a showcase for new poetry, articles, book reviews, market information, news and readers? views.?
  • Apart from being incredibly supportive of writers on the page, and via email, The New Writer can also be found on Facebook?(where you can ?like? them? and I?m sure they?d love it if you wrote something on their wall) and Twitter?(where you can follow them and again I?m sure interaction would be appreciated).
  • Subscriptions (see http://www.thenewwriter.com/subscribe.htm) are just ?27 for 18 months? worth of magazines or ?49 for three years. I?ve been a subscriber for at least double that and it feels like it has ?grown? as I have. :)
  • They welcome (from subscribers) articles, features, shorts (including a 300-word max micro fiction? regular readers of this blog will know how much I love my flash fiction and I keep meaning to submit!), news items, poetry and even a ?Writer?s Rant? ? see their guidelines page for more details.
  • Speaking of shorts? The New Writer recommends Catherine Smith?s The Biting Point from Speechbubble Books.
  • TNW Index: You can now check on the contents of the first 100+ issues of The New Writer.? The new improved index is now available as an attachment, simply email admin@thenewwriter.com and type Index in subject.? The TNW index will give you details of every feature, fiction and poem that has appeared in the magazine since the first issue in 1996 in alphabetical order by author.? In addition, TNW back issues are available (not many left of the first dozen or so ? but there are some) at ?1.50 each (to subscribers only) plus p+p (see the magazine).? So if you see something you fancy it couldn?t be easier to read it. If you live in the UK and request the Index and do decide to order some back issues, please send a cheque payable to The New Writer if it comes to ?5 or more, otherwise please send postage stamps to The New Writer, PO Box 60, Cranbrook, TN17 2ZR.? If you live overseas please email (admin@thenewwriter.com) for a quote.
  • They also have a Writer?s Library with a great selection of books.
  • Almost finally, classified ads printed in The New Writer magazine are charged at the following rates for all ads up to 50 words:? ?10 as a one-off;? ?15 in two consecutive issues;? ?20 in three consecutive issues.? Further placings, longer ads and small display ads by negotiation. Again an email will do the trick.
  • Oh and they even kindly mentioned me (which I hadn?t spotted until I started compiling this ?flash?)? :) ?Amazing list of 440+ interviews with writers, poets, agents, publishers etc by Morgen Bailey can be found here: http://morgenbailey.wordpress.com/blog-interviews? which just goes to show how supportive they are of writers? ?new? or otherwise. :)

***

You can sign up to receive these blog posts daily or weekly so you don?t miss anything? and follow me on?Twitter?where each new posting is automatically announced. You can also read / download my eBooks and free eShorts at?Smashwords,?Sony Reader Store,?Barnes & Noble,?iTunes Bookstore,?Kobo?and?Amazon, with more to follow. I have a new?forum, friend me on?Facebook, like me on?Facebook, connect with me on?LinkedIn, find me on?Tumblr, complete my website?s?Contact me?page?or plain and simple,?email me.??I also now have a new?blog creation service?especially for, but not limited to, writers.

Unfortunately, as I post an interview a day (amongst other things) I can?t review books but I have a feature called ?Short Story Saturdays? where I review stories of up to 2,500 words. Alternatively if you have a short story or self-contained novel extract / short chapter (ideally up to 1000 words) that you?d like critiqued and don?t mind me reading it / talking about and critiquing it (I send you the transcription afterwards so you can use the comments or ignore them) :) ?on my ?Bailey?s Writing Tips??podcast,?then do?email me. They are fortnightly episodes, usually released on Sundays, interweaving the recordings between the red pen sessions with the hints & tips episodes. I am now also looking for flash fiction (<1000 words) for?Flash Fiction Fridays?and poetry for?Post-weekend?Poetry.
