TMN Go launches on iOS and the web, brings HBO Go-style experience to Canadians

TMN Go launches on iOS and the web, brings HBO Gostyle experience to Canadians

While viewers in the US have had access to HBO Go streaming on a varying number of platforms over the last few years, the licensing situation in Canada has, until now, made it more complicated. That's changing today, since Astral Media is bringing its The Movie Network Go app for iOS and PCs out of beta (an Android version is "in the works and launching shortly") with access to movies from many studios, as well as TV shows from HBO, Cinemax and Showtime. In Canada, Astral airs content licensed from our US premium networks as well as some Canadian productions and airs them on its five multiplex channels, including HBO Canada.

Some providers have already been streaming content online with setups like Rogers On Demand Online and Videotron's Illico, but hopefully this should make the feature more widespread. Currently it's open to customers on Bell Fiber / Satellite TV and Cogeco Cable, with Rogers due "in the coming weeks." Specific features announced include streaming over WiFi or 3G, playback state that syncs across devices, up to three simultaneous streams and five registered devices per account and more. Check out the press release after the break for all the details and a list of some of the available content.

Apple patent application reveals a camera with built-in privacy filter

Apple patent application reveals a camera with builtin privacy filter

It feels a bit strange to report on a webcam privacy shade as if it were a novelty: various products already let users put a decorative background on screen in lieu of a live stream, or even pull a physical shade across the lens. What Apple is apparently proposing, though, is a camera with such privacy filters built into the camera module itself. The company just applied for a patent on a camera whose images could selectively transition from opaque to transparent and back again, depending on how much privacy is called for.

Based on that illustration up there, we're going to hazard a guess it could be used in Apple's MacBook and iMac lines, though the patent application doesn't explicitly exclude mobile devices, either. (In fact, the filing acknowledges a camera like this could be used in, ahem, a television.) What we'd really like to know is how easy it would be for the user to active the privacy mode. Alas, though, the USPTO doc doesn't give any definitive answers -- the filing suggests the user could choose to switch modes, or that launching certain applications (i.e., those that use the camera) might trigger a change in privacy settings. In any case, that's about all we can glean from the patent application, but feel free to peek for yourselves if you feel like letting your imaginations get ahead of you.

By Philiana Ng, Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

It's time to look for another zip code. "90210"?will end its run on The CW after five seasons, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.?The series closer airs Monday, May 13.?(THR?broke the news?Feb. 25 that?Michael Jackson's eldest son, Prince Michael, would be appearing in the finale.)

?The CW has had five great seasons with America?s favorite zip code, '90210,'? said CW president?Mark Pedowitz. ?I?d like to thank the talented cast, producers and crew for all their hard work and dedication to the series. We are very proud of the West Beverly High alumni.?

Hitting a series low of a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49 and 550,000 viewers for the Feb. 18 episode, the current season has seen the aging drama drop quite a bit in the ratings. Season-to-date, it is averaging a 0.4 in the demo and 928,000 viewers. It gets a Live+7 DVR boost, but just enough to push it to a 0.7 rating in 18-49.

"90210" debuted on The CW in September 2008 as a modern update to "Beverly Hills, 90210," which lasted 10 seasons. The one-hour drama revolved around students at West Beverly High. Shenae Grimes, Tristan Wilds, AnnaLynne McCord, Jessica Stroup, Michael Steger, Jessica Lowndes and Matt Lanter co-star on the new version, and some "Beverly Hills, 90210" vets have reprised their roles on the show.

During the years, "90210" has gone through several key changes, with castmember exits and changing showrunners.

Meanwhile, decisions to bring back "Nikita," rookie 1980s drama "The Carrie Diaries," "Hart of Dixie" and "Beauty and the Beast" have yet to be made. The CW?gave early renewals to "Supernatural," "The Vampire Diaries" and freshman breakout "Arrow" this month and moved midseason entry "Cult" to Fridays starting next week.

Michael O'Connell contributed to this report.

Stephenie Zamora: How to Take a Step Back in Order to Make Huge Strides Forward

Sometimes you have to take a step back, a time out from your life.

Sometimes you have to leave behind everything and everyone you know in order to really, truly discover and connect with yourself. To regroup and recalibrate. There's nothing wrong with this, in fact, it's absolutely necessary in order to continue growing as an individual -- to continue moving toward a fulfilling and passionate life.

When you stay close to the everyday of your life -- sometimes even your family, old school friends and the community you grew up in -- you tend to stagnate. You fall in line with their expectations of you, the expectations of what kind of person you should be, based on who you were before and where it is you live. It's hard to become the person you're truly meant to be when you're in a stagnant situation.

You have to go somewhere where no one knows your name, the scenery is different and there are new people, ideas, experiences abound. Somewhere where you're free to just be you and take the time to explore who it is you want to become.

Far away from the stifling expectations of the people who think they know you best.

And when you're ready... you can go back, if you so choose.

You might find there's a much better community of people, job, house or style for you and make the decision to never return to where you were (or who you were) before. Either is perfectly okay, so long as you make the decision for yourself.

But what if you really can't just move across the country, travel abroad or completely uproot your life? How do you take that step back and reconnect with yourself? Remember, it's about taking a time out, not uprooting your life.

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the phenomenal book Eat, Pray, Love has this to say about taking a step back, and I couldn't agree more:

If you are brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting (which can be anything from your house to your bitter old resentments) and set out on a truth-seeking journey (either externally or internally), and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue, and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher, and if you are prepared -- most of all -- to face (and forgive) some very difficult realities about yourself ... then truth will not be withheld from you.

You don't have to up and leave for Bali, quit your job or leave your husband to take a step back. You simply have to create space.

This could mean that you find 10 minutes every morning to start meditating. It could also mean signing up for a silent weekend retreat. Maybe it means booking a room in the next town over and staying overnight alone.

There isn't any right way to take a step back, but here are a few steps to get you started.

1) Get clear on what external expectations are stifling you.

Is it your job? Maybe it's your parents and what they want for you? Maybe it's your group of friends, the ones that haven't changed a bit since high school. Whatever it is, get clear on where you're feeling trapped by external expectations.

2) Plan your getaway!

Again, this doesn't have to be some major, life-changing event. You don't have to do anything drastic, but start putting a plan into place to create some space. Maybe it's time to cash in some vacation days and take yourself out on a hike. Nature is an amazing place to reconnect. Maybe it's a matter of attending some personal development seminars instead of the usual night out with "the girls."

3) Take action and start stepping back.

Look at your schedule for the next week or month, depending on what you need to do. Where can you schedule it in? What needs to shift for this to happen? Do you need to start saving up for a trip? Researching groups online? Make a clear, step-by-step plan for what you need to do to make this happen and schedule it.

Utilizing Personal Loans to Fund Your New Business Venture ...

For businesses that need a small to moderate amount of funding for start-up costs, getting a personal loan may be easier than getting a small business loan. Because many small business ventures are prone to failure and the assets of the business often secure the loans, most banks have stricter lending policies for small business loans. For example, if you run into trouble and it looks like your business is failing, the bank may ask you to pay back the loan in full whereas that is not as likely with a personal loan. Here are some suggestions on how to obtain a personal loan from sources other than traditional banks and how to use the money to fund your new business.

?

Peer-to-Peer Lending

Think of peer-to-peer (P2P) lending like venture capitalism for small businesses. Websites like Prosper connect borrowers with private lenders who are willing extend personal loans for a variety of reasons. One big advantage of P2P lending sites is that you can submit extensive paper work such as your personal financial information, your business plan, how you plan to repay the money and other information that will help convince the lender that you are a worthy borrower. If you have a good credit rating and you can make a good case for how you intend to use the loan, you may be able to find someone who will be willing to invest in your business.

Internet Lenders

In many cases, Internet banks have more lenient lending policies than traditional banks. You can often get personal loans from creditloan.com and similar websites even if you have less than perfect credit. Another advantage to getting this type of personal loan is that you build a relationship with the website?s lender. After you make a good number of consecutive payments on time, usually at least six to twelve, the lender will be likely to extend you more credit if need be or lower your interest rate. Internet lending sites save consumers a lot of time because they take your information and match you with the best lender so that you do not have to do as much legwork yourself.

Secured Loans

The trick to getting a secured personal loan is to use your personal assets as collateral, not your business assets. This will normally get you a better interest rate. This is also a great way to get the money you need at a reasonable interest rate without having to worry about the lender monitoring how your business is doing. Your personal assets secure the loan so, on paper, it has nothing to do with your business. One word of caution though, this ties your personal assets to the health of your business and puts them at risk. Make sure that you have a debt reduction strategy to pay the loan off as quickly as you can. It is also a good idea to have some kind of back-up plan for paying off the loan if for some reason your business is not as successful as you hoped.

Have a Spending Plan

Have a plan for how you are going to use the money from your personal loan in your new business. This will help you both while you are applying for the loan and after you receive it. Keep in mind that a spending plan is part of your budget, but it is not exactly the same thing. Your business?s spending plan should show how you are going to take the money from your loan and invest it in your business to turn a profit. It is also a good idea to not spend every cent you borrow and make sure you keep some money in reserve for unexpected emergencies. It is better to have money in the bank that you are not using than to not have money available when you need it.

Starting a new business is always a scary and exciting adventure. Finding the means to make your dream happen is thrilling. However, you must be realistic. When mix your personal finances with your business finances, things can go bad quickly if your plan does not work out as well as you hoped. As it with any financial venture, try to start modestly and build slowly. Starting a business is much like investing, if you can lower your risk factor than you have a better chance of staying financially viable longer. Moreover, when things do work out and you finally pay off your personal loan, that will make your business success that much sweeter.
