It's a new year, and along with your new year's resolutions, you may have an inbox stuffed full of old mail that you've been meaning to get to for weeks, or even months. If one of your new year's resolutions?or goals at least?is to keep a tidier inbox, get started now by archiving those old messages you know you'll never get around to.
Over at The Next Web, Drew Olanoff argues that if you haven't taken the time to read that backlog of email by now, it's time to go ahead and get rid of it. You're not likely to go that far back and respond to anything older than a week anyway?plus, any response you offer by this point may be woefully overdue, especially if someone's trying to get a hold of you for a business need, a recruiter asking if you're still in the job market, or someone who's emailed you asking for your help with a problem. If they've moved on, you can too.
Drew has a number of other great tips for getting the year started on the right foot when it comes to managing your email, like not letting your inbox stress you out, and taking a little time to analyze your inbox and make changes that can have big impacts?but we agree that selecting all and hitting archive is a great way to get the ball rolling. If you're looking for some ways to keep your inbox empty, we've discussed the trusted trio several times, and have a number of tips to help you keep a tidy physical and digital inbox that will get your year off on the right foot. Do you have any tips to share? Let's hear them in the comments below.
