Gmail composer goes to a simple popup, gives multitaskers freedom to fly

As much as Gmail shines when it's on the web, some of its most avid users stay in native apps for the multitasking; having to check a past message in the web client has usually meant putting the current draft on hold, or at least maintaining a near-photographic memory. Google wants to translate some of that desktop experience to the web through a new composition interface it's testing as of today. New messages start off in a shrinkable pop-up that lets us find old threads without having to put the new conversation on ice, even we're indecisive enough to leave multiple unfinished e-mail messages open. Other upgrades lurk in the background for the more focused among us, such as a pared-back composition interface, in-line photos and a reply box that dynamically adapts to the space it needs. Only those in the preview will see the Gmail update for now; Google is promising a wider launch in the months ahead that could save us all a few precious minutes each day.

Endeavour crawls through L.A. streets on slow roll to museum

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The retired space shuttle Endeavour rolled at a snail-like pace through narrow city streets on Saturday, arriving five hours late at a key checkpoint but steadily closing in on its final destination at a museum.

Enthusiasm remained high despite the slow pace with an estimated 165,000 bystanders lining the streets to greet the spaceship.

At its current pace, the shuttle could arrive at the California Science Center at about 2 a.m. Pacific Time (0900 GMT) on Sunday, said Paula Wagner, a spokeswoman for the center.

Endeavour nosed out of Los Angeles International Airport before dawn on Friday for the 12-mile (19-km) trip to its retirement home. Organizers had expected the shuttle to complete its journey on Saturday evening but it fell behind schedule crews had to make late adjustments to clear room for it.

The shuttle, which has been a cause for cheers and expressions of awe from spectators watching it parade through the streets, will become a tourist attraction at the center. Endeavour was largely built in Southern California and was a workhorse of the U.S. space program, flying 25 missions.

Astronaut Michael Fincke, who went to space in Endeavour, said he and other astronauts on the shuttle's parade route felt the shuttle's road trip - one unlike any voyage it has ever taken - was special.

"We've seen our beautiful planet Earth from space, we've been weightless, we've been able to fly - no special effects needed when you're in space," Fincke told the crowd outside a south Los Angeles shopping mall.

"And I tell you what, even though we've been in space we would not rather be anywhere else than where we are today," he said.

Organizers had planned to have the Endeavour arrive at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza mall at 2 p.m. but instead it arrived after 7 p.m. about five hours behind schedule, said the organizers, a coalition that includes the Science Center and local authorities.

A huge crowd gathered outside the mall, where a dancers and a high school marching band performed before the arrival of the Endeavour, at what was a key checkpoint because the ship had to make a 90-degree turn to the east. The trip from the mall to the museum is about 4 miles.

MAINTENANCE AND TREE TRIMMING

The trip has been delayed in part due to maintenance needed for the massive, wheeled transporter carrying Endeavor and the need to trim some trees along the route, organizers said.

An estimated 100,000 spectators lined Martin Luther King Boulevard to watch the final, eastward leg of the journey through working-class south Los Angeles, a spokeswoman for the move's joint information center said.

Earlier in the day, about 65,000 people watched the shuttle head north along Crenshaw Boulevard, said Steve Ruda, a battalion chief for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Thousands of spectators also watched earlier on Saturday when the shuttle stopped for a festival-like morning rally outside an arena in the nearby city of Inglewood.

Endeavour flew from 1992 to 2011 and was built to replace the Challenger, which exploded seconds into a 1986 launch that killed all seven crew members on board. Endeavour was taken out of service at the end of the shuttle program.

The shuttle is 122 feet long and 78 feet wide and stands 5 stories tall at the tail, which police said makes it the largest object ever to move through Los Angeles. Its combined weight with the transporter is 80 tons.

Organizers say only a few inches separate Endeavour's wings from structures along the route, and workers have felled 400 trees along curbs to clear a path. The science center will plant more than 1,000 trees to make up for their loss.

Some street lights, traffic signals, power poles and parking meters were temporarily removed.

The project to move Endeavour will cost more than $10 million, said Shell Amega, a science center spokeswoman. Charitable foundations and corporations have donated money and services for the move.

Endeavour has hop-scotched across the country from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the back of a modified Boeing 747. It had been parked at the airport in Los Angeles since arriving on September 21 after a ceremonial piggyback flight around California.

The shuttle will be displayed in a temporary hangar-style metal structure to protect it from the elements. In 2017, a 200-foot-tall (61-meter) structure will open in which Endeavour will stand vertically, said Ken Phillips, aerospace curator at the California Science Center.

The other remaining shuttles also have found homes.

The Smithsonian in Washington has Discovery at its Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center museum in Virginia. New York City has the prototype shuttle Enterprise at its Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. And the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral has Atlantis, which the center will move to an on-site visitors complex next month.

(AP) ? The Pentagon said late Saturday that it is investigating why a Navy submarine collided with an Aegis cruiser off the East Coast.

The U.S. Fleet Forces Command said in a news release that the submarine USS Montpelier and the Aegis cruiser USS San Jacinto collided at about 3:30 p.m. during routine operations. No one was injured, and the extent of any damage to the vessels was not clear Saturday evening, said Lt. Commander Brian Badura of the Fleet Forces Command.

"We have had circumstances where Navy vessels have collided at sea in the past, but they're fairly rare as to how often they do take place," Badura told The Associated Press.

Navy officials said the collision was under investigation, but declined to offer specifics on what happens next or on where the incident took place.

"If we do have an incident that does take place, there are folks that swing into action... to help us make a better, more conclusive explanation of exactly what happened," Badura said.

The news release says "overall damage to both ships is being evaluated," and that the sub's propulsion plant was "unaffected by the collision." Both Navy ships are based at Norfolk, Va. and are operating on their own power, the news release says.

Getting over long depression, wife lost faith...any advice, please

My wife and I haven't been married very long but we've been together for almost ten years. I'm 33. In the beginning things were great. Over the years I was apparently falling deeper and deeper into depression. I was always overly stressed, overly pressured, and for almost the entire period I was watching a sibling slowly die from breast cancer.

I always loved her more than the world itself, but problems started manifesting themselves physically...it's like my brain and body were disconnected. Mentally I always wanted her more than anything but physically my body was just tired, beaten, numb. Over the years we've talked, and it killed me the times she cried out of frustration. I always searched for an answer, to find what was wrong with me...but my approach was always wrong. I thought it was work and would set "milestones" for myself...if I can just achieve "X" the stress will go away, if I can just make a little more the financial stress goes away and I'll feel better. But it never did. I always tried to reason with myself on what the problem was, and I spiraled deeper and paniced more each time I found I was wrong. I thought I was working toward an answer, but instead I was always prolonging the problem.

Lately I've been reading and thinking a lot, and for whatever reason it became crystal clear: I had to make wholesale changes and get some help. I was focusing my energy in the wrong directions and had to change. So I did. I came home one day, umprompted by any recent conversation, and told her no words can express how sorry it took me so long to "get it", but I "get it" and don't want to live like this anymore. I was tired of simply feeling like I existed and not giving her the love and attention she deserved due to my own issues.

Two days after telling her this I found her crying downstairs, she said she was so frustrated for so long and was now angry that I finally had this epiphany. She resented the fact that I never listened to her and it took me this long, and she told me it's like she's gone numb. She says she still loves me but she doesn't want to be sad anymore. We're not separated or divorced, but she says she's trying to figure out what to do. She says she still loves me but she's lost her faith in my ability to change. We've both been seeing therapists, I've had two appointments and she had one this past Saturday. Mine is helping me get to the bottom of what caused everything, kind of a closet cleaning. Hers told her she needs to focus on herself and suggested maybe we need time apart.

It's been five weeks and five days since I drew the line in the sand myself; five weeks and three days since she broke down. Talk about timing. I keep hoping to get through to her and start to reinstill that faith, but her defenses are so tight at this point that forward progress isn't possible. She's trying to figure out where her head is but she says she doesn't want to hurt and be let down again. I know it takes time, I don't expect an overnight change, and I know in my heart this time I'm not going to stop what I'm doing...but she doesn't believe it. I love her more than life itself, always have. She's about the only thing that kept me going a lot of days through the years. I can never express how sick it makes me to know I've hurt her, and if she'll let me I want to spend the rest of my life showing her how good it can be and how much she deserves, not how far I can fall.

I know what I've done, and albeit unintentional I know that I've wronged her. And honestly, I can't blame her for feeling this way. I know I put us here...I can't change the past, and I'm so incredibly sorry it took me so long to realize how to fix my problems, but I always tried to deal with it as best I knew how. She said she's not upset because I've been sick, she's upset because it took so long to figure out how to fix it. Throughout it all I only wanted the best for her, I never meant to knowingly hurt her like this. I always thought i was working on it...next thing I knew years went by. I don't know what to do, except for what I have been for the past five+ weeks. This is the person she signed up for, not the one who was wallowing for years. But she's been unresponsive so far. She notices, and appreciates it, but she thinks it's all just going to stop at some point again. Has anyone been in this situation, on one side or the other? Any advice is appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Sorry for the long post, that's the first time I've gotten this all out.

Suomi NPP satellite sees auroras over North America

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Overnight on October 4-5, 2012, a mass of energetic particles from the atmosphere of the Sun were flung out into space, a phenomenon known as a coronal mass ejection. Three days later, the storm from the Sun stirred up the magnetic field around Earth and produced gorgeous displays of northern lights. NASA satellites track such storms from their origin to their crossing of interplanetary space to their arrival in the atmosphere of Earth.

Using the "day-night band" (DNB) of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite acquired this view of the aurora borealis early on the morning of October 8, 2012. The northern lights stretch across Canada's Quebec and Ontario provinces in the image, and are part of the auroral oval that expanded to middle latitudes because of a geomagnetic storm.

The DNB sensor detects dim light signals such as auroras, airglow, gas flares, city lights, and reflected moonlight. In the case of the image above, the sensor detected the visible light emissions as energetic particles rained down from Earth's magnetosphere and into the gases of the upper atmosphere. The images are similar to those collected by the Operational Linescan System flown on U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites for the past three decades.

"When I first saw images like this as a graduate student, I was immediately struck by the fluid dynamic characteristics of the aurora," said Tom Moore, a space physicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. "Viewing the aurora in this way makes it immediately clear that space weather is an interaction of fluids from the Sun with those of Earth's upper atmosphere. The electrodynamics make for important differences between plasmas and ordinary fluids, but familiar behaviors (for example, waves and vortices) are still very apparent. It makes me wonder at the ability of apparently empty space to behave like a fluid."

Auroras typically occur when solar flares and coronal mass ejections -- or even an active solar wind stream -- disturb and distort the magnetosphere, the cocoon of space protected by Earth's magnetic field. The collision of solar particles and pressure into our planet's magnetosphere accelerates particles trapped in the space around Earth (such as in the radiation belts). Those particles are sent crashing down into Earth's upper atmosphere -- at altitudes of 100 to 400 kilometers (60 to 250 miles) -- where they excite oxygen and nitrogen molecules and release photons of light. The results are rays, sheets, and curtains of dancing light in the sky.

Auroras are a beautiful expression of the connection between Sun and Earth, but not all of the connections are benign. Auroras are connected to geomagnetic storms, which can distort radio communications (particularly high frequencies), disrupt electric power systems on the ground, and give slight but detectable doses of radiation to flight crews and passengers on high-latitude airplane flights and on spacecraft.

The advantage of images like those from VIIRS and DMSP is resolution, according to space physicist Patrick Newell of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. "You can see very fine detail in the aurora because of the low altitude and the high resolution of the camera," he said. Most aurora scientists prefer to use images from missions dedicated to aurora studies (such as Polar, IMAGE, and ground-based imagers), which can offer many more images of a storm (rather than one per orbit) and can allow researchers to calculate the energy moving through the atmosphere. There are no science satellites flying right now that provide such a view, though astronauts regularly photograph and film auroras from the International Space Station.

The CEO As Communicator In Chief | CEO.com

Since CEOs don?t fill out time sheets, it?s hard to get a precise look at how each allocates his/her time.? I would bet that over the last two or three decades there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of time a CEO spends communicating.

Why?? Think about all of the stakeholders ? employees, shareholders, board members, customers, regulators, suppliers, elected and appointed officials, country managers, civic leaders ? and their demand for information from their leader.

Winston Churchill knew the value of communications. He called speaking, writing and interviewing skills the Language of Leadership.? The types and channels for communications change over time.? Ten years ago, most CEOs didn?t know about blogging and tweeting; today these are channels to reach key audiences.

The Communicator in Chief must master a variety of skills and it?s hard to say which communications skill or channel is most important. ?They change depending on the company, market and business goals. If you?re running for President, i.e. CEO of the United States, the big tent speech and debating are probably the most important.? When launching a new product, media skills could top the list.? For fundraising, you need to master the small group ?ask.?? For a road show, it?s nailing the Q&A from investors and analysts.? For all of these situations, rehearsal and coaching always improves the performance.

Following are ten critical areas of communication where CEOs need to know their audience and the skill set they need to win that audience over ? plus one or two tips to help you improve.

1.? Public Speaking

  • Audiences:? Customers, shareholders, industry keynote audiences, non-profit work, employees, recruits.
  • Skill set:? Read or speak from prepared text, notes, the teleprompter and extemporaneously; executive presence when your image is on a large video screen.
  • Best tips:? Practice out loud in the room where you will give the speech. ?Master the teleprompter for the big tent speech.

2.? Media Interviews

  • Audience:? Media has two audiences ? the reporter and the ultimate reader, listener or viewer.? The end user has three questions that go beyond the facts ? So What, Who Cares and WIIFM (What?s In It For Me). Think about how a non-company insider will relate to the information.? News coverage is called ?earned? vs. ?paid? media.? Media coverage supports marketing and adds credibility to your messages.
  • Skill set:? Developing key messages (?sound bites?), learning the ?bridging? technique, avoiding misstatements and negatives.
  • Best tip:? Take advantage of the last question, or ask and answer it yourself.?

3.? Internal Presentation Skills

  • Audience:? Employees and staff members. ?Settings vary from small groups to town halls.
  • Skill set:? Know how to work with PowerPoint or other supporting visual aids.
  • Best tips:? Remember that you are the CEO.? Your ?deck? should be more big picture than down in the weeds with details.

4.? Negotiations

  • Audience:? The person/people across the table from you, followed by their members/constituents.
  • Skill set:? Word choice, body language, location and room set-up are critical communications variables. General rules, such as ?Win/Win,? ?Getting to Yes? or ?You Can Negotiate Anything,? only take you so far.? Look at your specific surroundings and needs.
  • Best tip:? Think ?next time.?? Unlike the one-time deal purchases where there is no next time, most successful negotiations plan for the ongoing relationship.

5.? Email and Voicemail

  • Audience:? Internal and external.? More and more companies find themselves managing in whole, or in part, by email and voicemail.
  • Skill set:? Leadership requires proper grammar and spelling in emails, articulate and succinct voicemails.
  • Best tip:? Stop and think before writing and speaking.? Emails and voicemails both have a degree of permanence.

6.? Meeting Management

  • Audience:? Whoever is in the meeting.
  • Skill set:? Leaders develop the skills for setting agendas, moving discussions, dealing with challenging participants and summarizing.
  • Best tip:? Start on time and end on time.? This shows respect for your employees, board members and other participants.

7.? Road Show Communications

  • Audience:? The road show combines aspects of public speaking, presentation skills and meeting management.? Meetings can range from a full conference room to a one-on-one with a key investor.
  • Skill set:? Essential skills include a masterful delivery of the ?deck,? showing teamwork with co-presenters, and nailing the Q&A.? While the road show is all about the numbers, it is also about the company ?story.?
  • Best tip:? Rehearse, rehearse and rehearse some more, especially the most difficult financial Q&A.

8.? Lobbying Skills

  • Audience:? Local, state and national legislators and regulators.
  • Skill set:? Short, succinct communications, aka the elevator speech.
  • Best tip:? Don?t make it about you; figure out what?s best for the legislator or regulator.? If they look good in front of their constituents, you?re more likely to accomplish your agenda.

9.? Crisis

  • Audience:? Internal and external.? Crises come in all forms, although natural disasters, personnel issues and other business catastrophes tend to top the list.? Despite years of hard work, the value and reputation of a company can be harmed in a nano-second.
  • Skill set:? Much like buying business and personal insurance, leaders need to prepare for these possibilities.? Then they must simulate the crises and learn from the experiences.
  • Best tip:? Leaders are almost always the best communicators for the enterprise in a crisis.? Use the mirror principle.? Hold the mirror up to your company and its particular culture, marketplace and issues.? Don?t copy someone else?s plan.

10. Social Media, including Blogs, Twitter and YouTube

  • Audience:? Customers, competitors, employees, regulators et al.
  • Skill Set:? Clear succinct writing and speaking with stories and examples (or links to stories and examples).?
  • Best tip: Develop a consistent but less formal tone than an annual report, speech or shareholder meeting.? Whether written by the CEO or ghost written, social media can be your most effective tool for communicating your brand.

Earnings Quality: Evidence from the Field - Accounting and Small ...

October 8, 2012 ? 11:42 AM

Small business of-interest and news-to-watch.?? A study with findings from the CFO side?is believed to provide?better insights into the issues and a probable fix.

Excerpt:? Our findings raise a host of possible directions for future research. Here we only discuss a few broad themes, with more specific suggestions given at appropriate places later in the paper. One broad direction is increased attention to the sustainability of earnings, and the inter-temporal relation between earnings and cash flows. Another broad direction is closer attention to the role of standard setting in the determination and quality of earnings. Our survey suggests that standard setting has a first-order effect on the utility of earnings but there is a relative paucity of research that examines this connection. In addition, the evidence leaves little doubt that there is a sharp dissonance between standard setters? and CFOs? views on the proper determination of earnings, e.g., the roles of matching and fair value accounting. Research can help to bridge this gap, and more generally these are issues that go to the heart of accounting and affect much wider constituencies, so this is an area with much potential for significant work. Finally, there is considerable potential for further research into the detection of opportunistic earnings management, a topic of much interest to investors, auditors and regulators

Myths of Overweight and Health - Eating Disorders Blogs

I love when I find an article which speaks to my heart about food and weight, and these days many do as they debunk the myths about overweight and health. Think extra pounds puts you at risk for disease and early death? Think again and read on.

An article by Harriet Brown, In ?obesity paradox,? thinner may mean sicker (NY TIMES, 9/17/13) is a real eye-opener and not the first of its kind I?ve read recently providing a new paradigm for thinking about weight and health. ?In study after study,? says Brown, ?overweight and moderately obese patients with certain chronic diseases often live longer and fare better than normal-weight patients with the same ailments. The accumulation of evidence is inspiring some experts to re-examine long-held assumptions about the association between body fat and disease.? She cites a 2007 ?study of 11,000 Canadians over more than a decade? which ?found that those who were overweight had the lowest chance of dying from any cause.?

Brown cites several reasons for this seeming paradox. 1) The body may need more calories and energy reserve during chronic disease, putting fat people at an advantage. 2) Perhaps thinner people have gene variants making them more susceptible to certain illnesses, which puts them at greater risk when they become ill. 3) Maybe doctors treat heavy people more aggressively than thinner people based on the mistaken belief that overweight causes disease. 4) There might be only correlations between weight and disease, not a cause-and-effect relationship. ?A series of studies by Steven Blair at the Cooper Institute in Dallas shows that being fat and fit is better, healthwise, than being thin and unfit.?? Says Glenn Gaesser, author of BIG FAT LIES, ?Cardiovascular fitness is a far more important predictor of mortality risk than just knowing what you weigh.?

What does this information mean to you? First, science knows more about weight now than it did in the past and it pays to be well informed. Second, you can bring along a copy of this article (from the web) and others like it to your health care providers to enlighten them to back off on harping on your weight. Third, you can stop living in fear that you?re going to die before your skinny colleague/spouse/friend/neighbor/relative.

It?s time to get off the weight-loss bandwagon and focus on ?normal? eating, fitness, and developing effective living skills all of which will help you enjoy life and actually be healthier. The more you know the truth about weight and health, the more you?ll feel empowered to take excellent care of your body.

Best,

Karen

Catching up: PLoS Pathogens apologizes for retracting XMRV ...

Last week was a bit of a whirlwind in Retraction Land, thanks to a big study of retractions in PNAS and a lot of resulting press coverage. So we didn?t have a chance to update readers on an ongoing story and discussion involving the PLoS journals.

As ScienceInsider was first to report last week, the editor of PLoS Pathogens, Kasturi Haldar, has now apologized for retracting a paper allegedly showing a link between the XMRV virus and prostate cancer without having contacted the second of two corresponding authors. Retraction Watch readers may recall that Haldar told us on September 19:

The authors were contacted by email on August 27th regarding our decision, and were asked to comment on the retraction text and suggest changes. We did not receive a reply, and decided to move forward with the retraction in conjunction with the PLOS ONE publication yesterday, September 18th.

Here?s part of Haldar?s blog post on the matter, posted on September 28:

PLOS Pathogens communicates with authors through the corresponding author. This is our standard practice. We invited commentary through the corresponding author with whom we communicated during manuscript submission and review. The email address was and is current: the individual is an advisory member of our editorial board. We have apologized for not contacting the second corresponding author. Our expectation was that the first would discharge responsibilities to all remaining authors. We have since corresponded with all authors.

ScienceInsider reported that the Robert Silverman, the corresponding author who wasn?t contacted by the journal, thought a correction would have been enough, while Joe DeRisi, the other corresponding author, felt differently:

On Saturday, DeRisi posted a response to the retraction, in which he said he agreed with it. But whether he received the 27 August e-mail, and if so, why he failed to respond or to alert his co-authors, remains unclear. (DeRisi did not respond to multiple emails and voice messages from ScienceInsider.) Silverman says he cannot comment on DeRisi?s inaction; ?Suffice it to say we have not been in contact for a long time,? he says. As to the journal?s apology, ?I accept it, and I really appreciate it,? he says.

The discussion over the retraction had already prompted Haldar and PLoS editorial director for medicine Virginia Barbour to write a post explaining their retraction policy. Some of the language in that post drew heavy criticism from Retraction Watch readers and others, to which Barbour replied saying one particular phrase ? ?If a paper?s major conclusions are shown to be wrong we will retract the paper? ? has been ?pulled out of the blog and over/misinterpreted.? In the second half of the September 28 blog post, Barbour reiterates that PLoS is ?not making a new policy here.?

Proud to be a part of Teachers & Social Media ? Teaching the Teacher

Image used under creative commons licence

It?s been a long time in the making but Teachers & Social Media has finally been launched. As I alluded to back in February, I was asked by Teachers Council to sit on the?reference group?for the project. ?It?s been really interesting to be involved in the development of this resource but what?s been the hardest has been?not blogging and tweeting about the project.

Bloggers love to share and keeping this experience quiet has taken a fair bit of willpower.

But now that the site has been launched, I am relatively free to write on the topic.

To say I was surprised to get an email asking me if I was interested in contributing to the project was a bit of an understatement. After all being a first year teacher what could I have to offer? However, I have rambled and ranted about social media use a lot on this blog. So what I lack in teaching experience, I more than make up in?opinions on the subject teachers? use of Social Media. It felt really?satisfying?to know that my work my actually influence people?s thinking on this topic.

Although the experience was ?great to be part of there were multiple times where I wondered why on earth I add extra workload into my first year of teaching. And yes there ?were some emails that sat in my inbox for waaaay too long while projects in the classroom took my attention. Nevertheless, I?m proud of what the awesome people at Teachers Council have produced and happy to be associated with the final outcome.

My participation in the project got me thinking.

Does being connected help get you?recognized?

This is a difficult subject to writing about without being labelled as being?smug, arrogant,?conceited?, or even all three but here goes.

Because the more I think about it, I simply wouldn?t have had the?opportunity?to be part of this project if I didn?t have a social media presence. I?m sure the cynics out there would go ?well duh it?s a social media reference group of course they need a few social media junkies.?

But when I look back on my experience of finding a teaching job, something that is really tough in today?s market, my social media presence meant I secured a?permanent?position relatively quickly.

When I look at so many of the ideas that I?ve implemented in the classroom, they?ve come through social media.

When I look at the submission project in?particular?so much of what made the project effective, simply wouldn?t have happened without me being out there participating in social media.

I see such an immense value in being connected to not only other members of the global profession but also to wider society. And these connections have opened up?opportunities not just for me but more importantly for my students.

Popular media stories of teachers using social media are almost always all bad. Career-ending tweets and the ever-present concerns about?cyber-bullying.? I?m not saying that these issues aren?t serious and shouldn?t be worthy of consideration.?However this fear is also ?holding back?innovation. Because being connected is an opportunity for me as a teacher to learn and maintain relevance with the ever-changing world.

Perhaps the Teachers & Social resource might actually change the course of our conversations in social media in education away from the risk of being connected towards more the risks in not being connected.

On the way home of my student submitters remarked, that the experience is something that the wanted to mention when they apply for a job.

To me this was a bit of a?eureka?moment.

Could social?media?have the potential to bridge that often-maligned gap between ?school learning? and the ?real world?? Could ?the networks and knowledge that students develop when completing projects become the?launching?pad for a great career?

I?m not sure of the answer to that question but in the mean time being involved with this particular project has formed a great entry to show how I am meeting the Registered Teacher Criteria.

SpaceX set to launch with cargo for International Space Station

The first commercial resupply mission to the International Space Station is set to lift off from the Kennedy Space Center Sunday evening.?From the space station crew's standpoint, some of the most precious cargo could well be ice cream.

The first commercial resupply mission to the International Space Station is set to lift off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida Sunday evening ? kicking off a series of at least 12 resupply missions NASA has ordered up under a $1.6-billion contract with Space Exploration Technologies, based in Hawthorne, Calif.

The mission, utilizing SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket topped with the company's cargo-carrying Dragon capsule, follows on the heels of a successful test flight to the space station in May.

During that mission, Dragon delivered just over 1,000 pounds of cargo that NASA officials said wouldn't represent a significant set-back for the space-station program if something went wrong during the mission. This time, Dragon is carrying 882 pounds (nearly a ton when packaging is included) of more-precious cargo: experiments and hardware for the US, European, and Japanese laboratories; additional components needed to maintain the station; and crew supplies.

IN PICTURES: Launch of SpaceX's Falcon 9 Rocket

From the space station crew's standpoint, some of the most precious of all the cargo could well be ice cream Dragon is bringing up ? not the freeze-dried kind, but real ice cream, kept in a new lab freezer Dragon will deliver. It's part of a shipment of "bonus food" the space agency periodically sends. The freezer is designed to preserve samples from biology and life-science experiments running on the station for return to Earth.

Indeed, Dragon's ability to return cargo to Earth is unique among the unmanned cargo craft the station's international partners provide. NASA's space shuttles were the only other vehicles able to do this. But NASA flew its final shuttle mission in July 2011, and the orbiters now are museum pieces.

All of the other cargo craft operating, as well as the capsule a second US company is building to supply commercial cargo service for NASA, become trash incinerators once they leave the station. They and the refuse they carry burn up on reentry.

Dragon is slated to return to Earth with 1,673 pounds of cargo, including components from the station's life-support system that failed and were replaced with on-orbit spares.

"It's good to be able to have that capability back," says Michael Suffredini, NASA?s space-station program manager. It saves money when hardware needs to be repaired and sent back to the station, and it allows engineers to examine the components to figure out why they failed.

gulftoday.ae | Cellphone can ruin your relationship: Research

LONDON: New research has found mobile phones can damage personal relationships merely with their presence no matter they are being used or not.

According to psychologists who conducted the experiments at Essex University, mobile phones automatically trigger thoughts about wider social networks, reducing the level of empathy and understanding in face-to-face conversations, ?Daily Mail? reported.

The two studies found if a mobile was visible during a conversation it caused people to feel less positive towards the person with whom they were talking.

The findings suggest fiddling with one's cellphone or simply leaving it in view during a romantic dinner or a meeting with a friend could be a serious social faux pas.

"In both studies we found evidence mobiles can have negative effects on closeness, connection, and conversation quality," said lead researcher Andrew Przybylski.

The studies were the first designed to check the effects of a mobile phone being present on face-to-face communication.

49ers set franchise yards record, beat Bills 45-3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? One of the most prolific passing performances of Alex Smith's eight-year career again put the Buffalo Bills on the wrong end of a San Francisco 49ers record.

Smith threw for a season-high 303 yards and three touchdowns, Frank Gore ran for 106 yards and a score, and the 49ers amassed a franchise-record 621 yards in blowing by the Bills 45-3 on Sunday.

Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis each eclipsed 100 yards receiving to back Smith from the start. The 2005 No. 1 overall pick threw TD passes of 43, 28 and 10 yards and surpassed 300 yards passing for only the third time in his career.

Rian Lindell kicked a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter before San Francisco (4-1) scored the final 42 points to hand Buffalo (2-3) its second straight embarrassing loss.

San Francisco's previous best was 598 yards in a 34-31 loss to Buffalo on Sept. 13, 1992.

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 126 yards and an interception, and the Bills rushed for only 89 yards, most with the game well out of hand once again.

The Bills allowed 45 second-half points and 580 total yards in an embarrassing 52-28 home loss to New England last week. Beginning a two-week road trip, Buffalo's baggage also traveled to the West Coast.

Since taking a 21-7 lead against the Patriots last week, Buffalo has been outscored 90-10. The Patriots and 49ers combined to gain 1,178 yards. And with the 49ers shredding the New York Jets last week, they've outscored opponents 79-3 the past two weeks.

With the Bills unable to slow anybody down on defense, San Francisco abandoned its usually conservative game plan to deliver a scintillating show in the air.

Smith completed 18 of 24 passes and won for the first time when he threw for 300 yards. He also had a perfect 158.3 passer rating in the first half, when he threw for 237 yards ? a career best for a half.

The longest completion Smith had in the first four weeks was for 29 yards. In the first half alone, he completed a 53-yarder to Davis that set up a field goal by David Akers, a 43-yard touchdown to Kyle Williams and hooked up with Crabtree for 36 yards.

Williams took the back-shoulder pass from Smith, spun away from a defender and ran the final 10 yards free into the end zone. Williams fell to his knees, raised his arms and nodded to the sun-splashed crowd at Candlestick Park after giving the 49ers a 10-3 lead.

Every time the Bills blew an opportunity ? and they blew plenty ? the 49ers capitalized.

Backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick fumbled on an end-around and Buffalo took over at its own 17. Two plays later, Patrick Willis stripped Scott Chandler, San Francisco recovered and Smith floated a 28-yard touchdown to Crabtree to put the 49ers in front 17-3 with 24 seconds to go before the half.

A holding penalty on Jairus Byrd wiped out a punt return Leodis McKelvin took for a touchdown in the first quarter. The offense failed to score any points after McKelvin returned a kickoff 59 yards. And after a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took nearly 6 minutes stalled in the second quarter, Lindell kicked a 31-yard tying field goal for Buffalo's first score.

Smith led another touchdown drive that featured Kaepernick gaining 15 yards on a sweep and ended one play later when Gore dove over the pile for a TD that extended San Francisco's lead to 24-3.

Chris Culliver intercepted an underthrown pass by Fitzpatrick just shy of the goal line to end Buffalo's best chance to reach the end zone all afternoon.

Smith also tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Mario Manningham, Kaepernick ran 16 yards for a score and Anthony Dixon added a 3-yard run for the final touchdown.

Bills defensive end Mario Williams wore a small stabilizer on his left wrist instead of the brace he sported the first four weeks. He grabbed at his wrist after a short catch by Davis in the second quarter, never had a sack and was a complete non-factor against the 49ers offense.

Then again, so were most of his teammates.

Buffalo, which snapped an eight-game road losing streak with a Week 3 win at Cleveland, started a string of four of its next five on the road with another setback. The Bills will practice in Arizona next week to get ready for the Cardinals instead of traveling back East, similar to what the 49ers just did staying in Ohio between games at Minnesota and New York.

New sport opportunities fund designed to help Keep Kids Out of ...

Community organizations in Manitoba will get sports equipment and vital facility upgrades as part of a new Strategy to Keep Kids Out of Crime. This announcement was made by Children and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief. The minister said the strategy comes out of months of consultation in which he listened to people in communities, large and small, across Manitoba.

?Thousands of Manitobans from different backgrounds and all regions of the province came out to share their stories, concerns and ideas,? said Chief. ?Everywhere I visited I heard about the importance of providing positive options and opportunities to kids no matter where they live. I am working with our community partners to keep focused on those priorities.?

As part of the five-point strategy to Keep Kids Out of Crime, the province today launched a $500,000 Sport Opportunities Fund, which will give more young at-risk Manitobans the opportunity to get involved in sports and find healthy and positive after-school and weekend opportunities, Chief said.

The minister said community-based sport and recreation organizations will be able to apply for grants that will increase sporting opportunities for high-needs youth and communities with:

? up to $10,000 for permanent equipment such as volleyball standards, goal frames and athletic field line painters; and
? up to $2,500 for equipment with a shorter life span such as volleyballs, pucks and uniforms.

?We all share a responsibility to keep children and communities on the right track,? said Lawrence Mulhall, executive director of the Broadway Neighbourhood Centre. ?I am happy to have been part of the consultations that led to this new strategy. I look forward to playing a role in making the future brighter for all our kids.?

Consultations leading up to the development of the strategy included public meetings in Winnipeg, Brandon, Dauphin, Morden, Norway House, Thompson and The Pas, and 18 stakeholder meetings with municipalities, First Nations leaders, law enforcement, faith groups and youth-serving organizations.

Chief said ideas and comments from the meetings resulted in five points that will be the focus of Manitoba?s Strategy to Help Keep Kids Out of Crime:

1. Strengthening the Early Years and Schools

Research shows that when children are given a strong start in early life by supporting positive parenting and early childhood education, communities can be safer by preventing crime for years to come.

2. Creating Youth Opportunities

Youth is a time of possibility. The strategy builds on the foundations of the early years of life and school by creating opportunities to help youth prepare for positive and productive futures.

3. Supporting Recreation and Healthy Communities

After-school recreation programs offer promising approaches for crime prevention. Along with other community activities, they provide structure, supervision and skill building to promote youth success outside of the classroom and in the community.

4. Promoting Mental Health, Preventing Substance Abuse

Families, caregivers, educators and service providers all have a role to play in ensuring the mental, spiritual and physical wellness of families and communities.

5. Safer Streets: More Beat Cops, Better Correctional Facilities, Tougher Laws

A stronger justice system, including an enhanced police presence on the streets, continued investments in correctional facilities and more robust consequences for those who commit serious crimes is crucial to keeping families and neighbourhoods safe.

?This strategy will enhance our efforts to prevent youth crime and youth victimization in rural Manitoba,? said Chief Superintendent Scott Kolody, acting commanding officer for RCMP ?D? Division. ?Providing kids with recreational opportunities encourages them to engage in positive activities.?

?Manitoba?s Strategy to Keep Kids Out of Crime will build on previous successes in the area of crime prevention,? Chief said. ?The province?s one-of-a-kind Turnabout Program provides consequences and supports for youth under the age of 12 who have come into contact with the law. The Winnipeg Auto Theft Suppression Strategy has reduced auto theft dramatically since its introduction in 2004 and Winnipeg?s rates of auto theft are now the 10th in Canada, down from highest in the nation.?
