Five Washington air traffic control towers slated for closure

Staff Puget Sound Business Journal

Five contract air traffic control towers at smaller airports in Washington state are slated to close beginning April 7, as the result of federal budget cutting.

The towers, out of 149 towers that will be closed by the Federal Aviation Administration across the country, are located at Olympia Regional Airport, Renton Municipal Airport, Felts Field Airport in Spokane, Tacoma Narrows Airport and Yakima Air Terminal/McAlllister Field.

"Given the breadth and scope of the closures, the FAA cannot possibly fully understand the safety impacts, the operational impacts or the immediate and long-term economic hardships this decision will have on affected airports and communities," said J. Spencer Dickerson, executive director of the U.S. Contract Tower Association, in a statement.
